Culturally Responsive Practice in U.S. Suburban Elementary Schools: Literature Review

Abstract

Culturally responsive practice (CRP) and implementation research is typically conducted in urban areas in pre-k to 12 educational institutions. However, there is limited research on CRP in suburban elementary schools. The aim of our literature review is to examine CRP strategies used by suburban elementary preservice teachers, practicing teachers, school administrators and school districts over a fifteen-year period from 2006 to 2021. Our review includes nine articles and one report. We used Aronson and Laughter’s (2016) 4-markers of CRP to organize our findings. We found strategies aligned with each of the 4 markers yet each also study revealed barriers which inhibit successful CRP implementation in its totality.
