Evidence points to systemic inequalities in clinical performance assessment (CPA) for students with minoritized racial/ethnic identities. Recommendations to address this bias include the use of grading committees, but evidence of their efficacy is scant. This study used a QuantCrit approach to compare CPA ratings by underrepresented in medicine (URiM) status for individual (n=3670) and grading committee (n=519) forms. Analysis showed fewer items on the grading committee summary form with significantly lower means for URiM students (1 item vs. 4 items on the individual CPA). The grading committees used group discussions to permit perspective-taking and drew on multiple data sources. These committees may serve as a structural way for schools to diminish the impacts of interpersonal racism on clinical assessments.
