Faculty Teaching at the Intersections of Institutional and Disciplinary Cultures

Abstract

This exploratory study applies a cultural framework of college teaching to examine how institutional and disciplinary cultures intersect in how they relate to faculty teaching practices around deep approaches to learning and collaborative learning. Using cross-classified multilevel modeling, results show some limited intersections between disciplinary and institutional cultures. However, it is clear that disciplinary cultures, as encapsulated by the Biglan categories, exert far more influence on faculty teaching than institutional characteristics or the interactions of the two. Results could suggest that in the face of stronger disciplinary cultures, broad institutional efforts to improve teaching may have limited impact.
