Perspectives on Literacy From Parents of Children With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: Thinking Expansively

Thu, April 13, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

This presentation will share findings from a qualitative project exploring family perceptions of literacy and literacy goals for their elementary children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). We interviewed 22 families to explore their definitions of literacy, literacy activities at home and school, and literacy goals for their children. Each parent completed two, semi-structured interviews. We analyzed the interview data using a sociocultural framework and critical inclusive lens to explore family framing and goals of literacy and explore how these conceptions (a) align with traditional or expansive notions of literacy, (b) position students as competent (or not), and (c) disrupt/reify ableism. The presentation will include a discussion of findings and implications for teacher preparation, inclusive instruction, and family partnerships.
