Abstract

During an era where Co2 emissions are causing increasing damage to human and more-than-human lifeforms, it is essential to consider the role of education to address the climate emergency. Although neoliberal structures and ideological culture wars in the U.S. present challenges to teaching about the climate crisis, this research asserts the potential of ecopedagogies and critical media literacy as viable tools that can support teachers’ practices and students’ learning and actions for environmental sustainability. Bridging ecopedagogies and critical media literacy theories with practice, this qualitative case study explored how an instructional team emboldened university students in Southern California to engage in critical media analyses and productions to generate awareness and actions for environmental justice.
