What Are the Key Differences Between Teachers' and Students' Perceptions of Social Emotional Learning?

Abstract

One approach to diminishing school violence, absenteeism, insubordination, and low academic progress is implementing social emotional learning (SEL) programs in public schools. Students attending alternative schools are an at-risk population in need of effective SEL to learn how to be socially and academically successful. Two separate instruments explored the perceptions of students participating and teachers implementing SEL programs in two Florida disciplinary alternative schools on the effectiveness of the programs on student academic, behavioral, and social emotional outcomes. Data was collected through purposeful and convenient samples. Key factors of SEL perceptions were explored through exploratory factor analysis and principal component analysis. In addition, reasons for differences were explored. Results benefit students’ learning, teachers’ instruction, SEL program development, and future studies.
