Computing Education for Social Good: Preparing Undergraduate Computer Science Majors to Become Anti-Biased K–12 Educators

Abstract

Undergraduate computer science majors are the least likely to see a connection between their major and global citizenship. CS undergraduates need opportunities to learn how to think critically about the relationship between CS and society and become thoughtful producers of technology. One approach is to position CS undergraduates as informal K-12 computing instructors. This paper outlines the experiences of undergraduate CS majors who participated in a bias in CS lesson during a 3-week summer teacher training preparing them to lead various informal K-12 computing programs. We highlight the key characteristics of the bias lesson, student reactions to the lesson, and future considerations on how to support undergraduate CS majors to become active change-makers in K-12 CS education and beyond.
