Transition Planning Into Employment: Supporting Students With Intellectual Disability in Communication

Sat, April 15, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 2, Superior B

Abstract

Students with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) are frequently asked to prove themselves worthy of accessing various spaces including postsecondary education and employment settings. Completing an Inclusive Postsecondary Education (IPSE) program has recently been connected with greater success in employment spaces that were often off limits. This study focuses on the nexus between IPSE with embedded employment/internship opportunities and post-employment outcomes. Findings from this research demonstrate a need to critically examine communication and how inconsistent communication among stakeholders can negatively impact individuals’ employment outcomes. The miscommunications identified in this research are explained and discussed with suggestions to improve IPSE programming in ways that can reduce the prevalence of these communication barriers.
