Abstract

While the intersection of literacy and science achievement has long been of interest to researchers, a more recent focus relates to how science teachers use texts (e.g., textbooks, trade books, articles, research reports, etc.) to support and facilitate learning. This mixed-methods study contributes to existing knowledge on how to address low academic achievement in science by examining how, and to what extent, teachers use texts as the basis for learning within science lessons. Survey and interview data suggest that while science teachers aim to engage students with a variety of texts, they often use them in ways that limit opportunities for text-based learning. This research adds to current scholarship aimed at advancing science learning and outcomes for middle school students.
