Abstract

This study employed a scoping review method (Tricco et al., 2018) with the aim to summarize the state of knowledge on language and communication measurements of 28 years old children with complex communication needs (CCN) who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). The systematic search and screening on five databases included a total of 213 studies. The results showed a majority of studies reported the use of observational measurement systems (88%), while a large number of studies (41%) used standardized measures that was originally developed for typically developing children or for diagnostic purpose. Findings from this study indicated the need for comprehensive language and communication measurements with validity evidence for children who use AAC.
