Exploring Faculty Members' Perceived Success in Research and Teaching: The Role of Motivation and Emotion

Abstract

Faculty members’ output in research and teaching has a direct impact on education, science, and society. Despite this, little is known about the psychological processes that give rise to faculty members’ success in these domains. The purpose of this study was thereby to investigate how faculty members’ motivations and emotions matter for their perceived success in research and teaching. To this end, 152 faculty members completed a survey assessing their achievement goals, emotions, and perceived success in both domains. Path analyses revealed substantial and differential associations between achievement goals and emotions, as well as between emotions and perceived success in both research and teaching domains. These findings can be used to inform research and initiatives to promote faculty success.
