While teacher staffing challenges have been well documented, there is less known about the strategies that EPPs are employing to explicitly address place and rurality during teacher preparation, and the impact of those strategies to support teacher recruitment and retention. This paper presents findings from a 14-institution collaborative NSF-funded study of educator preparation programs (EPPs). Data about EPPs have been gathered and analyzed through the lens of curriculum, context, and conveyance (Azano, et al., 2019), a framework for rural teacher preparation. Identified features of EPPs from across the project and focusing on two sites in the South and Appalachia, include field experiences in rural schools; rural-focused discussions, reflections, assignments, and seminars; and partnerships with rural schools and communities.
