Examining Mediator Effects of the Relationship Between Rapid Automatized Naming and Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) is the ability to quickly and accurately name visually presented familiar symbols, such as digits, letters, colors, and objects. iStations Indicators of Progress (ISIP) RAN assessment is a digital experience that is designed to save educators time and it is intended to be used as a screening tool that may identify students who might be at greater risk of reading difficulties. The purpose of this study is to examine predictive validity and the contribution of RAN to explaining reading comprehension above and beyond extant measures of reading ability. A mediation analysis illustrated that RAN showed a significant indirect effect on reading comprehension via pseudoword decoding, phonemic proficiency, letter naming facility and text fluency.
