Decolonizing Methodologies Through Art in Formal and Informal Education

Abstract

We designed an educator workshop to give participants a toolbox of methods and strategies to introduce decolonizing methodologies into their practice. As art educators in formal and informal spaces we propose that both artworks and museum visits can serve as vehicles to approach topics of antiracist practices, culturally sustaining pedagogies, and critical multicultural education.
In consideration of the current socio-political climate, part of this research will acknowledge the challenges faced by educators, specifically in Texas, but reflective of a broader national environment. Our study aims to assess the effectiveness of the workshop in helping attendees integrate these approaches into their educational spaces and feel more comfortable talking about these important topics, while still working within the state constraints and affordances.
