Measurement of Prior Knowledge in Multiple Document Comprehension Research: A Psychometric Review

Abstract

Of all the many individual difference variables that have been studied in relation to reading comprehension, there are perhaps none that have received more attention than prior knowledge. This is justified given the powerful influence prior knowledge has on reading comprehension. Despite the prevalence of prior knowledge measures, differences exist in how prior knowledge is conceptualized and measured. We investigated reliability and validity information reported for measures administered in the empirical studies for prior knowledge measures and for specific dimensions of knowledge. Methodological practices related to scale selection and development, estimation of reliability and validity, and directions in data analysis are recommended with reference to exemplars of best practice reported in the literature.
