Reasons Why Parents Employ Private Tutors in Nigeria

Abstract

This study aims to use in-depth qualitative interviews to explore why parents often pay high tutoring fees to support their children’s education, despite the monetary burden it creates. A total of 15 parents who hire private tutors to assist their primary school-age children in doing their homework were selected for this study. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the qualitative interview data collected. The preliminary findings of this study show that despite the financial stress parents are experiencing due to the hiring of private tutors to assist their children in doing homework, they invest in tutoring to improve their children’s academic performance. This study shows that parents' busy work schedule prompted them to hire private tutors for their children.
