The problems of inequity and access in gifted education have been solidly documented. However, a closer examination of the data uncovers additional hidden barriers to underrepresented students’ inclusion in gifted programming, including a dearth of advanced programming in middle schools; gateways for students who did not qualify for gifted services in elementary school; schools’ inconsistent policies around accelerative options, and barriers to effective technology use to offer gifted programming. This mixed-methods study explored the effects of a hybrid/online accelerated language arts program for bright, traditionally underserved 7th-graders. Recommendations include the use of broader identification measures and local norms; the use of technology to facilitate access to programming; and the implementation of a program of professional development for administrators and teachers.
