Transformative Learning: A Comprehensive Assessment Framework for Languages Across the Curriculum

Abstract

Languages Across the Curriculum (LAC) is emerging as a promising model of language education for disciplinary language study, but it is under-researched and under-assessed. Moving forward, robust assessment measures will be crucial to further legitimize and institutionalize LAC in institutions of higher education. Accordingly, this review identities challenges associated with the past use of language proficiency and survey-based assessments in LAC. Building on lessons learned, it works toward a comprehensive and holistic assessment framework that is informed by transformational learning perspectives (Mezirow, 1990). To assess student learning in a wider range of domains and disciplines, the paper makes a case for the use of diverse and integrated assessment methods, including more qualitative, longitudinal, and written/reflective forms of assessment.
