The Latina/o/x Graduate Student Experience: Advancing Our Collective Understanding

Abstract

Latina/o/x students are enrolling and graduating from college at an increased rate over the last decade (U.S. Department of Education, 2019). While the student population is becoming more ethnically and racially diverse, the faculty population is not representative of the students they serve. Graduate education is critical in supporting the faculty “pipeline” and an understudied area, especially the Latina/o/x graduate student experience. This paper reviews how literature has examined graduate student success for Latina/o/x students. Preliminary results from the systematic review revealed that Latina/o/x graduate students experience discrimination and alienation, clash with the graduate socialization process, and benefit from faculty support. This review will help to develop a research agenda to investigate Latina/o/x graduate student success.
