Equity has become a ubiquitous topic in education, often without definition. This study examines how school districts define and address equity and diversity in the context of principal pipelines. Focal districts participated in a professional learning community to support pipeline planning and development. Equity and diversity were not foci of the initiative, yet often filtered through districts’ motivations, goals, and actions. We used two sources of data collected from central office leaders involved pipeline work: surveys administered in 62 districts and in-depth interviews in 30 of these districts. We focus on how districts conceptualized equity and diversity within pipelines. They often used these terms interchangeably, gravitated toward diversity efforts, and were less likely to address development of equity-centered leaders.
