Breaking the Sexist Prejudices: Roma Men Stand Up for Gender Equality (Poster 32)

Thu, April 13, 4:40 to 6:10pm CDT (4:40 to 6:10pm CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: East Tower - Exhibit Level, Riverside West Exhibition Hall

Abstract

The scarce research on the Roma community regarding violence against women and gender equality sometimes includes racist prejudices that lead to wrong results and further discrimination. Drawing on the Communicative Methodology and the New Alternative Masculinities (NAM) approach, the RomaNAM project (Macías-Aranda & Ríos-González, 2021) fills this gap by including the voices of Roma on these issues. This paper builds on focus groups of Roma men and women deepened on the positive results of questionnaires filled out by a representative sample of Roma men in Spain. Results strengthen the fact that Roma men care for women’s rights and take a strong stand against gender violence. The preventive potential of this approach is highlighted and the implications for practitioners are discussed.
