Abstract

This study examined the effects of four pedagogy models, Direct Instruction, Play Practice, Sport Education, and hybrid of SE and PP on the badminton content knowledge and skill of a cohort of 105 Chinese physical education majors during semester-long courses. A quasi-experimental design with pre- and post-measures was used. Separate ANOVAs with repeated measures (group x time) were conducted to compare the models on four dependent variables: forehand clear, tactical understanding, game performance, and specialized content knowledge. Students from all conditions made significant improvements in all four variables except SCK in the Direct Instruction. Further, students in the Play Practice, Sport Education, and the hybrid condition showed significantly greater gains in specialized content knowledge without diminishing their CCK.
