Cultural Humility: Concept Analysis Scoping Review

Abstract

The intersections of cultural identities impact how individuals engage with education, professional development, and most facets of life. Many scholars suggest that culturally responsive education helps individuals maximize their potential, but those approaches vary significantly. In response to persistent disparities in healthcare, two physicians proposed moving from cultural competence training to cultural humility training for health professionals. Since the inception of the term in 1998, cultural humility education has been implemented in the fields of medicine, psychology, allied health, social work, and education; however, the founding principles are inconsistently applied. In this session, the author will present the results of a scoping review and concept analysis of cultural humility to showcase emerging models and contrasting visions of cultural humility.
