Abstract

Teachers are uniquely positioned, but frequently underprepared, to support the development of sustainability-literate citizens. The purpose of this study is to explore how preservice teachers (PSTs) plan to engage students in informed action for environmental and social impact. We have designed a framework for Action-oriented Pedagogies (AOPs) to explicate the actions and roles of those working to take meaningful action. We used the framework to analyze PSTs’ instructional sequences for a sustainability unit. Findings suggest PSTs are aware of actions related to AOPs, but may struggle to enact them with depth. Incorporating AOPs into PST coursework as well as refining the framework to more fully acknowledge available pedagogical resources may better support PST use of AOPs in their practices.
