Impact of Prior Experience and Cognitive Load at Initial Learning: The Case of Drone Operation (Poster 35)

Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of prior experiences on cognitive demands at initial learning. Drone operation was the initial learning experience with videogame use as a prior equivalent experience. The NASA Task Load Index was used to measure cognitive demand. Participants operated drones at three instances over two weeks. A mixed ANCOVA suggested a significant interaction between videogame player group and time in explaining the mental demand scores: F(2, 10) = 7.15, p = 0.012. Spatial ability, measured as a covariate, was significantly related to mental demand: F(1, 5) = 10.96, p = 0.021. Results suggest cognitive load can decrease over time with repeated use of the skill when there is no prior experience.
