Advantages and Opportunities of Learning Pragmatics in Content and Language Integrated Learning: A Systematic Review

Abstract

In second language learning, linguistic competence such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar are usually emphasized, while the pragmatics level of the language can be easily ignored in the learning and teaching process. Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and Content-Based Instruction (CBI) are instructional models that combine content knowledge and second language learning, which may enrich the cultural context and promote interpersonal communication. This systematic review investigated papers published in the last 20 years on pragmatics study in CLIL and analyzed the characteristics of CLIL classroom that could provide opportunities for pragmalinguistics and sociopragmatics gain, which formed its advantages in promoting foreign language learners’ pragmatics competence compared with traditional EFL classes.
