Developing Computationally Minded Teachers: An Embedded Computational Thinking Experience for Preservice Teachers

Abstract

As computational thinking (CT) makes its way into K – 12 education, teachers who can integrate it with their instruction will be highly coveted. However, most new teachers will not enter the classroom with experience either learning or teaching CT (Hunsaker et al., 2019). Creating opportunities for future teachers to learn CT in their own training can help prepare them to design experiences with CT for their future students, but the teacher preparation curriculum is already congested. This paper describes the integration of a short experience with CT into an existing course and shows how even a short CT module can impact preservice teachers’ confidence with CT.
