In Pursuit of Our Truth: Reimagining the Higher Education Narrative With Black Women School Leaders

Abstract

The data on Black women leaders’ (or lack thereof) indicate a need to understand at deeper levels the various lived realities that complicate and influence Black women school leadership. This study explores how Black women school leaders describe challenging and difficult times in leadership to gain a deeper understanding of how Black women develop as leaders and enact leadership practice. The exploration includes discussion of navigating adverse historical, social, and personal contexts by investigating the shared experiences of Black women leaders within schooling communities. We strive to tell our truths and move our leadership out of the margins and toward the center of leadership studies.
