Abstract

Situated within CRT and LatCrit, this critical autoethnographic testimonio of a Mexican migrant-farmworker-turned-Latino-professional provides the participant-researcher’s voice of truth. A result of consequentiality, the critical testimonio includes (1) a personal journey through a process from assimilation to acculturation; (2) the unintentional personal actions rooted within deficit thinking; (3) reflections on self-doubt, survivor guilt, and invisibility; and (4) affirmation of self-power to bring about change. In conjunction with the founders of a rural community celebration of Hispanic culture in South Georgia and three other critical researchers, the Latino professional shares his in-depth look at lived experiences, reveals parallels between community acceptance and the urgent need to disrupt deficit ideology and make changes in his practices to improve cross-race/ethnicity relations and expectations.
