Changes in Engineering Identity Among Undergraduates During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

Analyzing data collected for the same group of students before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, we examine the changes in engineering identities during the pandemic as engineering identity is a predictor of student persistence in the field. We found changes in engineering identity among key populations including women-identified and non-White engineering majors. Then, we explored whether Carlone and Johnson’s, (2007) Science Identity Model could be adapted to become a suitable model for studying students’ engineering identity during the disruption of traditional college operations.
