Exploring Social and Emotional Learning Within Educator Preparation Programs in Oregon

Sun, April 16, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

There is a growing need for teachers to be prepared to attend to the social and emotional development of their students. With this need comes the responsibility for Educator Preparation Programs to thoroughly prepare teacher candidates in SEL so that they enter the teaching field ready to do so. Unfortunately, extant research has revealed that EPPs across the U.S. are inconsistently providing the type of coursework or experiences that pre-service teachers need in order to feel prepared in various dimensions of SEL. The current study explores how EPPs in Oregon are preparing, or not preparing, teacher candidates to enter the field ready to attend to the social and emotional dimensions of teaching and learning.
