Thu, April 13, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 7th Floor, Grand Ballroom Salon III

Abstract

This study investigates an English Learner Improvement Network unique in the extensive collaboration between English Learner (EL) researchers and Improvement Science (IS) facilitators to co-design and co-implement network meetings, coaching, and technical assistance to provide comprehensive EL content knowledge and the use of Improvement Science processes to improve education. Results of interviews with the EL researchers, IS facilitators, and district and charter leaders indicated the important influence of content and process knowledge, educational context, right-sized changes, collaborative coaching, and teacher leadership. Recommendations for future improvement networks include assuring deep content and process knowledge through intentional co-design and collaboration, adapting to the educational context, building from smaller to larger change initiatives, providing extensive coaching, and teacher leaders to support implementation.
