Abstract

How do we use artificial intelligence (AI) in our daily lives, where does it use our data, and how can/should we shape these uses? These questions guided the AI & Data Audit, an activity where middle grade and undergraduate students tracked and evaluated their interactions with AI. In this paper, I analyze students’ engagement with AI & Data Audits, finding through qualitative analysis that attending closely to data generation and AI use revealed near-pervasive engagement with AI. Although most students felt they received sufficient benefit from AI applications to justify sharing their data, some were uneasy with this arrangement and sought ways to resist. However, students focused almost exclusively on individualistic responses rather than opportunities for collective action.
