Prior research conducted on reading comprehension outcomes and motivation has often ignored that motivation is situationally bound. That is, readers do not experience a uniform level of motivation to read in all situations. Unfortunately, no standardized measure of situational reading motivation has been developed to help researchers explore this understudied construct. The current study addressed this gap by developing the Situational Reading Motivation Measure (SRMM). Across two studies, the SRMM was found to reliably capture two classes of reading motivation in adults (approach and avoidance reading motivation). The SRMM was also found to predict comprehension over and above existing motivation and strategy measures. The SRMM thus provides an important new tool to researchers interested in reading motivation and comprehension.
