Participatory research in education can allow for the unique views, questions, and truths of those who are typically cast as the subject of research - teachers and students - to be heard and recognized. It can also be an emancipatory turn that necessarily upsets traditional structures of power in schools and schooling and this especially the case in participatory research with children. This paper shares how we responded to the challenges of obtaining genuine consent to participate, creating and using appropriate research methods, engaging children in data analysis, and sharing findings in ethical and authentic ways in our longitudinal participatory research with elementary students.
