A Meta-Analytic Examination of the Associations Between Achievement Goals and Achievement Emotions

Thu, April 13, 4:40 to 6:10pm CDT (4:40 to 6:10pm CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: West Tower - Ballroom Level, Acapulco

Abstract

Both achievement goals and achievement emotions have been found to be important within educational contexts. Stemming from distinct appraisals (Pekrun, 2000; Pekrun et al., 2006), different goals are theoretically linked to different emotions. This meta-analysis examined the relations between six goals and fifteen emotions and various moderators by including altogether 359 studies and 2,679 effect sizes from 156,632 participants. Findings primarily revealed linkages between goals and emotions that corroborated hypotheses. Additionally, performance-goals showed associations not only with outcome emotions, but also with activity emotions. Relational-goals were linked not only to positive affect and enjoyment, but also to anxiety. All moderators revealed significant effects. The results suggest the relevance of considering the interplay of goals and emotions on a discrete level.
