Family Medicine Residency Program's Experience With Virtual Interviews During COVID-19: A Cross-Sectional Survey Study

Abstract

Objectives: In this study, we aimed to (1) understand the impact virtual interviews had on family medicine applicants (interviewees) and faculty who interviewed applicants (interviewers) and (2) to understand both participants’ view on the use of novel technology within the recruitment process and clinical practice.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey study. Participants were both interviewers and interviewees who applied to the McGill University Family Medicine Residency Program.
Findings: The response rate was 91.7% (55/60) for interviewers and 43.2% (57/132) for applicants. All interviewers were mostly satisfied with virtual interviews, while the majority (68.5%) of applicants found it easy to communicate despite the virtual format. Interviewees are more interested and eager in novel technologies compared to interviewers.
