The Impact of Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) and Services on Rural Students' Postsecondary Enrollment (Poster 33)

Abstract

This study aims to examine the impacts of GEAR UP (GU) program and services on rural students’ postsecondary enrollment (PSE). We retrieved data from our Cohort 1 subjects (N = 3,245). Among these students, we have two subgroups: (a) True GU Student - students who received services every year from the 2014-2015 academic year through their graduation in 2020 (n = 2,163); and (b) Non-True GU Student - students who joined the program during that period (n = 1,082). Our results showed that ‘True’ students had a higher PSE rate than ‘Non-True’ students. Our results also showed that both direct and virtual services had meaningful relationships with PSE. Generally, our GU program has a positive impact on rural students’ PSE.
