Rethinking the Use of Exclusionary Discipline on Minoritized Students

Fri, April 14, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

The paper presentation will explore the ineffectiveness of exclusionary discipline for curtailing discipline incidents. Economically disadvantaged students are one of the most vulnerable populations and are the most affected by exclusionary discipline consequences since they often have difficulty connecting to their school community which is crucial for minoritized students, exhibit anti-social behavior, have lower academic achievement, low attendance rates, and are at risk of not graduating (Anyon et al., 2018; Carver & Lewis, 2010; Cramer et al., 2014; Cruz et al., 2021; Kennedy et al., 2019; Moore et al., 2020; Skiba & Losen, 2015; Skiba & Peterson, 1999).
