Abstract

Motivation is an important predictor of academic success and choice (Howard et al., 2021), but can be difficult to measure. Pragmatic measures of motivation that are efficient, meaningful, and understood by the participants are necessary to advance motivation research in ways that avoid undue burden on participants. Within this study, we investigate quantitative validity evidence of one such pragmatic measure—a brief mathematics motivation measure administered within a mathematics learning software. We find support for internal structure, relationship among similar constructs, and evidence of predictive validity for mathematics performance. Results demonstrate that meaningful measures of motivation can be administered in minutes in the context of students’ existing schooling.
