High School Students' Perceptions of College Access Barriers

Abstract

An ample research literature on college access investigates possible barriers to college education that inhibit postsecondary enrollment. This study sought to examine high school seniors’ perceptions about possible barriers to postsecondary education by exploring their responses to the senior exit survey. Results were largely in line with existing body of research, precisely most students considered the cost of college education as the primary obstacle. Additionally, students identified non-monetary barriers such as not being smart enough for college, not fitting in college, and having family obligations that could impede college plans. Disaggregating student responses by their demographic characteristics, parents’ education level and academic achievement allowed for deeper analysis of the similarities and differences in student perceptions of possible barriers for college.
