Questioning Predominant Mathematics Toward Loving Possibilities (Poster 32)

Sat, April 15, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: East Tower - Exhibit Level, Riverside West Exhibition Hall

Abstract

This poster proposal aims to trouble the unquestioned philosophical assumptions underlying dominant understandings of mathematics within mathematics education research to argue that other assumptions can be made. Through foregrounding the ties that dominant mathematics, commonly perceived as intrinsically tied to acts of representation, has with colonizing interests and worldviews, this poster hopes to amplify work that urges mathematics educators to question their own assumptions of what mathematics should entail. This poster, thus, desires to start conversations in, although not exclusively, the mathematics education community to (re)open the field to other ways of understanding and relating with mathematics, knowledge, and the world—ways that are non-hierarchical, non-human-centric, and loving—if we truly want equity for all.
