Based on a statewide sample of center-based teaching staff in California and guided by the Quantitative Critical Race Theory (QuantCrit) framework (Garcia et al., 2018; Gillborn et al., 2018), this paper explores the ways in which race/racism shapes disparities in compensation, support, and job stability among racial/ethnic groups within the early care and education (ECE) system, and ultimately contributes to an unstable workforce as a whole. The paper highlights how race/racism is interwoven into the structures within the ECE system, including program types, public funding mechanisms, and job roles, operating through and between all these factors simultaneously.
