Using Employee Voice in Higher Education: Mechanisms to Support Enhanced Employee Recruitment and Retention Efforts

Abstract

Higher education is facing a staffing challenge due to the Great Resignation that has occurred due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To address this retention crisis, it is critical change occurs based on faculty and staff feedback and voice. Due to the limited research on employee voice in higher education, this conceptual paper integrates the current literature and applies it to the higher education context. Using Morrison’s (2014) framework on employee voice and Fuller’s (2006) rankism phenomenon, our paper will position higher education to rethink the mechanisms higher education employees have to express their voice, as well as provide insight to how higher education employee recruitment and retention may operate in order to meet the needs of its most important resource.
