Algorithm-driven technologies are transforming our world. While some public and private efforts exist to mitigate the harmful effects of these technologies, few measures exist to prepare students for the algorithm-driven world in which they live. This article reviews and reflects upon recent case studies of educators implementing the emerging Critical Algorithmic Literacy (CAL) framework (Dasgupta & Hill, 2020; Wang et al., 2022; Cotter, 2020). Using Kellner & Share’s (2019) critical media literacy (CML) framework to frame Critical Algorithmic Literacy (CAL) this paper examines promising practices and challenges to CAL implementation. The emerging CAL framework empowers students to evaluate, challenge, and reconstruct algorithmically-driven media.
