Examining the Influence of Ethnic-Racial Identity Development on Discrimination and Psychological Resilience

Abstract

Black and Latinx students continue to report experiences of discrimination, yet there is a dearth of research aimed at understanding Black and Latinx student resilience in the face of such opposition. This critical quantitative study evaluated the impact of ethnic-racial identity (ERI) development on the relationship between ethnic/racial discrimination and psychological resilience among Black and Latinx students at a Predominately White Institution. Mediation analyses revealed that for both groups, discrimination had the strongest positive effect on ethnic-racial salient attitudes and the strongest negative effect on assimilation attitudes. Several ERI attitudes served as protective factors and risk factors of resilience for both Black and Latinx participants. Suggestions for future research and higher education practices and policies will be offered.
