A Qualitative Study Examining Multiple Perspectives and Experiences of Caring in Health Professions Education

Abstract

We conducted fifteen focus group discussions with learners (students and residents), faculty clinicians, nurses, staff, and patients in six medical institutions across the United States with the aim of understanding and comparing multi-stakeholder perspectives of caring, identifying factors that hamper caring behaviors and exploring potential strategies that promote caring and self-care in the clinical environment. Results revealed that structural, institutional and individual aspects of caring interact dialectically and influence one another. The values and habits of caring identified from this study can be used to develop interventions to foster caring in the clinical environment.
