Characterizing Place-Based Learning Experiences in Postsecondary Education

Abstract

In recent decades, place-based learning has become a staple in the toolbox of many K-12 educators as a body of research on it’s efficacy has emerged in that arena. Studies taking stock of place-based practices in the postsecondary settings have lagged far behind. This study aimed to fill that gap. Key personnel at eight institutions were interviewed about their programs and personal beliefs regarding place-based education. Findings suggested a richness of programs similar to those in K-12 education, but key structural differences in the systems have led to different goals and outcomes as well as foci of existing programs. Opportunities for, increased student engagement, community outreach, and the support of local communities, particularly were observed.
