A Case Study of Teaching in a World Language Program

Abstract

A common goal for immigrant parents in the US is that their children maintain their heritage language and culture. There are an increasing number of language programs available to support these bi/multilingual children, but there has been little focus on studying language teachers in a mixed classroom, especially Asian language teachers. In this study, I analyzed two of my teaching videos in a world language program to see what instructions I used and how effective they were in motivating and empowering students. As a result, I found that my teaching instructions not only promote these children’ language and cultural development, but also create a space for them to bring their home language and culture into the classroom.
