Sociodemographic Mapping of Illinois: Assessing Equitable Access and Opportunity to Workforce and Education Resources

Thu, April 13, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 7th Floor, Grand Ballroom Salon III

Abstract

In an effort to understand the state of Illinois better, we created a base map characterizing the neighborhoods of the state using Census socio-demographic variables. We found that Illinois is made up of six unique neighborhood types that are spread geographically across the state. We then completed our first of several overlay maps to assess the equitable access and opportunity of education and workforce resources. Our overlay map of American Jobs Centers that offer WIOA services suggest that they are placed in locations that do provide equitable access, though equitable opportunity has yet to be determined.
